Located in the far south of Ontario, close to the American city of Detroit, Essex County enjoys the warmest climate of any of Ontario’s counties.

Our region typically has a warm, humid summer and a cold winter. Our climate is influenced by its location on the shores of the Great Lakes. Essex County has flat terrain which makes it a great place for active transportation and has a lot of waterfront trails for people to explore.

Although we are Ontario’s warmest county, our winters can still be severe. Snow depths of greater than 1 cm are seen on about 53 days in an average year in Essex County, compared with about 10 days each year in Vancouver, 35 days in Penticton, 65 days in Toronto, 88 days in Calgary, 120 days in Ottawa, and 132 days in Winnipeg.

We enjoy a sunny climate. Our summers usually have a generous number of warm or hot sunny days, contributing to our long growing season here.
