Paths and Trails Safety

Paths and trails are for pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles. The rules to follow while on paths and trails to keep yourself and others safe include:

  • Be courteous;
  • Be predictable;
  • Don’t block the trail;Two bikers on trail
  • Keep right unless passing;
  • Pass on the left when safe and wide enough;
  • Give warning before passing, so you don’t startle anyone;
  • Obey all traffic signs and signals;
  • Be active during daylight. But, if you must be out at night, use lights and reflective equipment and attire to be most visible;
  • Be respectful of private property;
  • Don’t litter;
  • Make sure dogs are on a leash, and clean up after them;
  • When cycling, ride at a safe speed;
  • Stop, look and listen when crossing a street; and
  • Consider walking your bike if the path/trail is crowded with pedestrians.
